Nature of Work:

This position is responsible to weld metal pipeline materials by using arc, mig, or stick welding equipment. Pass utility company welding test(s), obtain knowledge of welding standards and equipment maintenance such as changing leads, oil, etc. Use manufacturer’s guidelines to prepare and operate welding equipment.  This is a DOT-regulated and safety-sensitive position (FMCSA and/or PHMSA).

Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties listed below may vary in terms of importance and other duties may be added or eliminated as this position develops.

  • Manually guide welding gun along weld line to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molted puddle.
  • Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Examine weld for bead size and other specifications.
  • Apply filler rod manually to supply weld metal.
  • Clean or degrease weld joints or work piece(s).
  • Repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes.
  • Prepare broken parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces.
  • Chip off excess weld, slag, and splatter.
  • Preheat work piece with hand torch or heating furnace.
  • Position and clamp work pieces together or assemble them in jig or fixture.
  • Tack together assemblies.

  1. Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent. Post-secondary degree or certificate from two-year college or trade school.  Experience in lieu of education may be considered.
  2. One-year related experience and/or training.
  3. Valid driver’s license. Current DOT physical.
  4. CDL preferred.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, explosives, and vibration. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanic parts and weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Employees in this job classification are required to work extended hours on a regular basis, must be flexible with the work schedule, be able to handle stressful conditions due to productivity and time constraints.
